A Big Surprise for ‘Westboro Baptist Church’ While Protesting at a DC High School

Westboro Baptist Church protesters were met with a big surprise when they arrived in Washington, D.C., to protest at a local high school whose gay principal recently announced he was gay.

Wilson High School Principal Pete Cahall announced that he was gay last week at a Pride Day event at the school alongside D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and openly gay City Councilman David Catania.

“I want to say publicly for the first time because of your leadership, care and support that I am a proud gay man who just happens to be the principal of Wilson High School,” the 50-year-old, who also said he was tired of “hiding,” told the crowd.

Westboro protestors arrived at Wilson High School on Monday, June 9.

To the surprise of Westboro protesters, 1,000 students and residents had volunteered to participate in a counter-protest.

  1. What does the Principal’s coming out mean? Why do it? Was he fishing for mates? Why would it bother him that much to make an announcement? I get constipated on occasion, but I see no reason to make a public announcement about it–except in this case. No, his coming out had a purpose far beyond being open. Maybe it was to invite Westboro Baptist Church to town and encourage students to “cross the line” in protest. Then that’s not being honest, that was simply promoting a lifestyle.
