The president-elect’s aides say that Donald Trump will be meeting Saturday with retired Marine Corps General James Mattis. Mattis, known to his troops as, ‘Mad Dog Mattis,’ is a potential contender to serve as Trump’s defense secretary.
The Marine Corps Times called General Mattis, “The most revered Marine in a generation.”
General James Mattis was given the bum’s rush out of his job as commander of Central Command, by President Obama and was told to vacate his office several months earlier than planned.
According to American Military News, Mattis is one of eight people scheduled to meet with Trump on Saturday.advertisement - story continues below
If selected for the position Mattis would need a special congressional waiver to serve as Defense Secretary. According to title 10 of the U.S. Code the Secretary of Defense must be be out of military uniform for a period longer than 7 years to reinforce the norm of civilian control. Mattis retired from the United States Marine Corps as recently as 2013.advertisement - story continues below
It is believed that retired Army General Jack Keane is also being considered for the position.
