Top Democrats are defending Nancy Pelosi’ appointment of a Muslim congressman to the House Intelligence Committee after protests erupted on social media, warning the move is dangerous.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi appointed Rep. Andre Carson of Indiana to the panel, which oversees the government’s intelligence departments and activities. Much of the business that comes before the committee is classified.
Protests erupted on Twitter and other social media with complaints that exposing American secrets to Carson could be dangerous. Many question his true loyalties as an American versus his Muslim faith.
Democrats widely rejected that view. Pelosi said Carson is the only member of Congress to have served in a Department of Homeland Security Fusion Center, which provides intelligence sharing and training across levels of government. Carson also serves on the House Armed Services Committee.
Carson would be the first Muslim to serve on the committee and was the second Muslim to be elected to Congress. He already serves on the House Armed Services Committee and worked for the Department of Homeland Security’s Fusion Center — the clearing house established by the federal government to streamline data-sharing between the CIA, the FBI, the Department of Justice and the military.
André Carson, the U.S. Representative for Indiana’s 7th Congressional District, created controversy in 2012 when he told an Islamic Circle of North America convention in 2012 that American schools should be modeled after Madrassas, or Islamic schools that are built on the foundations of the Quran.
In the video, Carson also says the Muslim population is something the American education system needs.
“I have found … that we need an educational model that is current, that meets the need of our students. America must understand that she needs Muslims.”
Based on his comments in this video, it is a fair assumption that Carson’s biased opinion will lead his decision making process when in office. Combined with the other Muslim appointee’s Obama has working in his administration, it is also a fair assumption that the Islamic agenda will be more prominent in all factions of American lives.
