According to KEYT, Ramirez has been arrested four times over the past two years for narcotics violations. Santa Maria police chief Ralph Martin said Tuesday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement verified that he was in the U.S. illegally. The Santa Maria Times reports that his most recent arrest came in May 2014 and that he is still on probation stemming from that case.
On July 24th, 64 year old Marilyn Pharis was doing nothing more than sleeping in her bed in Santa Maria, California whenVictor Aureliano Martinez Ramirez broke into her house and brutally attacked her.

On July 24th, Marilyn Pharis had been sleeping when police say Martinez broke into her home and sexually assaulted her in the 900 block of North Dejoy Street in Santa Maria.
After the violent struggle, Pharis suffered severe injuries and was sent to a nearby hospital.
Reports initially said Pharis was 67 years old but her family tells KCOY she had turned 64 in April.
Pamela Frame describes her sister-in-law as a “gentle” and “strong woman” and says the family is devastated over the death of the Vandenberg Satellite Tracker.advertisement - story continues below
“We’re proud of her because she fought back and she fought back enough that the police were able to identify her attacker,” said Frame speaking to KCOY over the phone from Rochester, New York.
Pharis kept her family and friends updated on her progress everyday after the attack until she suffered a coronary embolism on Saturday, August 1.
Frame says doctors tried to revive her sister-in-law for 30 minutes but Pharis eventually died.
Police could not confirm if Pharis’ death was a result of injuries sustained from the July 24th attack.
After Pharis was assaulted that evening, police captured Martinez at another home in the 1000 block of West Donovan.
Santa Maria Police say the fact that Martinez is an undocumented, illegal immigrant does not matter as they continue to investigate the case.
“We have a citizen that lost her life, its serious, when you look at it, we don’t care what the circumstances were, we’re going to do what we need to do to get our facts and bring this individual to justice”, says SMPD Commander Kendall Greene, “if there are extenuating circumstances that arise as a result of that, that he’s an undocumented immigrant, then we will let the proper authorities address those issues when they present themselves.”
Martinez is in Santa Barbara County Jail on current charges of attempted murder, sexual assault and residential burglary and his bail is set at more than one million dollars.
Authorities say an autopsy later this week on Marilyn Pharis will determine if Martinez will be charged with murder.
His next court appearance is scheduled for August 13.
