A scary scene was caught on camera in Paterson N.J., as four suspects try to hold up a cell phone store and an officer tries to take the group down all by himself.

“He’s the guy that the younger guys, the junior guys and the rookies, they look up to,” Officer Toledo said about 30-year veteran Jaime Mejia. “Not every cop would have gone into that store alone,” Toledo said.

Mejia got a call about an armed robbery at a store on Park Ave, just before 5 p.m. Wednesday. The
suspects were reportedly threatening to shoot store employees, according to WABC.

As the intense situation unfolded Mejia says his instincts just kicked in. But before back-up arrived, one of the robbers got out of his sight, behind a sign, took a gun out of his waistband and hid it In a box.

“I was afraid he was going to grab my gun. And I keep telling him, ‘Stay back, stay back,’ and hoping that my last transmission went through,” said Mejia.

While Mejia was distracted, one of the suspects ran out of the store . When a second tried to follow Mejia tackled him down to the ground. The two ended up outside, where backup arrived moments later.

As officers tried to detain that suspect on the ground, employees inside the store were making sure the other suspects didn’t grab the weapon that had been hidden a box.

“At this point I have in mind that there’s a gun in the store that I witnessed and the threat is still there,” Officer Mejia said. But luckily no one was seriously hurt.

When the whole thing was over, three suspects were taken into custody .. a fourth got away.

Police say 18-year-old Delshawn Wright had 100 bags of heroin on him. He was involved in a shooting three days earlier, and officers say he was carrying a 45-caliber handgun during the cell phone store robbery.
