Maxine Waters labels parts of Trump’s immigration plan ‘very racist.’
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) slammed President Trump’s new immigration plan on Friday, calling it “very racist.”
On Thursday, the president unveiled his latest immigration plan, calling for changes to favor young, educated, English-speaking applicants, instead of people with family ties to relatives in the United States. The proposal is expected to have little chance of being approved by the Democrats in Congress.
He also asked for $4.5 billion from lawmakers to help house, feed, transport and oversee Central American families seeking asylum.
“There should be comprehensive immigration reform,” Waters said on CNN’s “New Day.”advertisement - story continues below
She added that an immigration overhaul should not be “based on exciting and inciting those people who have negative thoughts about others coming across our border, and basically working to use that information to promote himself in a campaign. And I think some of that is very racist.”
Waters said Trump’s plan, which calls for the United States to embrace a “pro-American” and “merit-based” immigration system that prefers skilled workers over immigrants with family members in the country, is “not keeping with what this country is supposed to be all about.”
“All of those things are not keeping in step with the way we treat human beings,” she said. “Asylum, those people whose lives are threatened – all these things should be taken into consideration.”advertisement - story continues below
Waters joins other Democratic lawmakers, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (Md.), in bashing the proposal, which has slim chances of passing in Congress.
Shortly after the president announced his plan on Thursday, Pelosi said it was “dead on arrival” and “not a remotely serious proposal.”
Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer is blasting Democrats for their repetitive “go-to line” in calling anything President Donald Trump does “racist.”
Waters’ statement didn’t sit over well with Spicer as she swiped back at congressional Democrats for not working with Trump on the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border.advertisement - story continues below
“This has become the go-to line for everything the Democrats don’t like,” Spicer responded to Waters’ remark.
“We clearly have a crisis at the border,” he added. “I think any objective person with their eyes open can see it.”
Spicer went on to suggest the Democratic lawmaker should come up with an immigration plan:
“So if Maxine Waters has a problem with the president’s problem, number one, she needs to acknowledge the crisis we have at our southern border and the problem that the current immigration system creates […] but secondly, she should come up with a plan. Right now the president is leading on this, and she’s not.”
Doubling down that Waters’ statement is “silly” and a “dog-whistle to the left,” Spicer suggested that she’s “equally accusing several countries that we have strong relationships with of being in the same.”

Even though House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) labeled Trump’s immigration plan “dead on arrival” on Thursday, the president claimed the next day that there’s a “good chance” Democrats will support it.
