Police Seize 6 Children Simply Because Family Was Camping

A Michigan family had made plans to spend the summer camping in the great outdoors was horrified when state officials seized their six children simply because they were temporarily living in tents.

The agonizing experience for Christopher and Antonia Hernandez began May 19 when Otsego County sheriff deputies and a CPS official took their children, and ended June 10 when their children were returned after the parents won a court ruling based on the fact the mother and children are eligible for enrollment in the Tlingit Native American tribe. The federal Indian Child Welfare Act makes it more difficult for state officials to separate Native American families. Michigan has a similar state law.

If the family had not had the Tlingit link, the case still would be ongoing, with the children still in foster care.

Off The Grid News reported that the removal never should have taken place, Christopher and Antonia told Off The Grid News, which has read the court documents – one of which criticizes the family for not having electricity or a water source. The family was near a state park and had purchased a pass to shower and bathe there. The parents also had a generator, a propane cooking stove, solar lights, five 6 gallon tanks of water, and plenty of food.

They have been living in the tents for nine days when police arrived.

“The government has tried to standardize what a home is and what a home must have, without consideration for if the children’s needs are being met or not,” Christopher and Antonia said in a joint statement. “This was not a case of neglect, but a case of the government telling us how we have to raise our children — that we must have running water, we must have electricity and we can’t stay in a tent for the summer. To the government it makes no difference if the children are happy and healthy. We need to conform to their idea of normal or they can take your children away.

On May 19, the parents left the property to do laundry at a laundromat, as well as to buy food and some fencing for the animals. The younger children were left in the care of their 15-year-old son, who is nearly 16.

A CPS representative also was on the property, and had concerns about the living conditions. CPS made four allegations, according to the official court document:

* The family was not in a “stable living environment.”

* The family had no electricity or water source, and was using kerosene as a means of heat.

* The children were playing in the woods, cared for by a 15 year old.

* The youngest child had a diaper rash.

The 17-year-old girl, who has Cerebral Palsy, was cold.

The children, ages seven months, 2, 4, 6, 15 and 17, had been living in the three tents – two of which were large nine-person tents – when the controversy began.

“Our family decided to go camping for the summer to a 10-acre property we are buying,” Antonia said, nothing they do own a house. “We had intended to stay the summer while we finalized plans on what we were going to do with our lives. We cannot say we would have stayed the whole summer due to the fact Christopher is donating a kidney to his mother and we may have been called home to do the surgery at any point. If this were to happen we planned to return home for the duration of the surgery and the recovery period however long that was.”

The parents simply “wanted our children to experience the outdoors” – and perhaps see if they wanted to live off-grid permanently.

  1. The Government is running ads, with taxpayer dollars, to put away your electrical gadgets and come to the forest. So would the Government be complicit in this ridiculous arrest.Enough already!

  2. Every Children’s Protective Services gang in the United States should be abolished and those members who have taken children should be charged with kidnapping. This is an abomination and should not happen in a free country.

    • This was not a police decision, John. It was a leftist government action.

The police have a lot on their plate as is without manufacturing offences. If they’re guilty of anything here, it is because they mindlessly followed mindless and unpopular orders.

    • I’ll say the same thing to you, Mannie. This was NOT a police decision. It was a leftist government action.

The only people who want police dead are inner-city thugs and criminals, and the only reason they want to kill cops is that cops try to keep them from preying on the innocent, NOT because of bad actions of the few.

      • DJYahtzee, you are not correct in your statement. There are plenty of people who are tired of the police doing things that are WRONG both in the law and society. Some of those people also want to see, at least a few of the police, them dead.

There are fathers who have lost their children because of the courts breaking the law who might also wish this.

In my own experience with the police breaking the law to harass me I can certainly understand it.

Prior to my wife filing for divorce I would have agreed with you. I would have always helped an officer in need. Today when I see an officer, because of the unjust and illegal ways they have treated me, the first thing I feel is anger. I don’t like it but they are the ones that have shown that they are not to be trusted. Granted not all police are bad. However, the bad ones seem to be great in number.

  3. WE lived that for quite awhile..10×48 foot trailer 8 kids no water no electric etc.No problems course the government wasn’t in everyone’s business back then. Did have some one check up out and she said everything was fine place was clean so were kids they all had a place to sleep and they were happy and healthy.

  4. Everyday comes a new law and a loss of a freedom and the public ‘obeys.’
When is enough…enough? Unless ‘everyone’ stands together, there will be no change. It could be my family or yours next. The United Nations wants their ‘One World Order’ = Global Dictatorship. They are training the people to ‘follow’ orders now and it’s working out just fine for them but what about us? Fear is what is keeping us enslaved. I stopped fearing them about 3 years ago when I found out the truth and corruption. No more! Peace and Safety everyone!

  5. The bigger picture is that the state wants to be the parent of ALL kids, except the kids of the elite, of course. This is the plan that Aldous Huxley revealed in his book “Brave New World” and it is definitely the plan of the elite. They want to turn all children into the property of the state and will use any lie, any ruse necessary to do this. They just don’t want you to know their REAL plan.

  6. Geez when I was a kid we use to call this a vacation. We would load up the station wagon and head out across America camping all over the place for the summer.

I just think that the government does not want us to teach our kids how to live off the land and survive without government handouts. Hard to make slaves out of self sufficient people.

  7. During my high school years, my dad and I moved out of our apartment, put our belongings in storage, and spent an entire summer camping in several national parks. I never wanted for anything, and read about a thousand books by a Coleman labtern. Come September, we got a new apartment and I resumed normal life. I’ll never forget that summer of ’66, THE BEST SUMMER OF MY LIFE.

  8. My Grandma took us camping in the summer. It was by a river, no bathroom and no running water. There was a porta potty nearby for us, we swam everyday, she heated water for the bathing and always carried drinking and cooking water with us. We slept in the back of a truck and in the car seats. She cooked over an open fire. We were happy and healthy. At the end of summer, we returned home to our parents (who had visited us at the camp) and resumed our normal, dull lives. We all grew up to be normal adults. Of course, the CPS didn’t stick their nose into everything back then, 1960’s and West Virginia! Memories of a lifetime! My son went camping like that with his dad and Boy Scouts. Guess CPS couldn’t find them?

  9. You know what’s really sad. They remove children from loving homes to give them to foster parents who sometimes don’t give a flip. I’m not saying “all foster parents” are bad. But many children are harmed both emotionally and physically when they are taken away from loving, caring parents. So glad these parents got their children back in time!!!!

  10. the cop are puppets for the communist gov. granted there are more and more that used to be bullied in school so they became cops to get revenge on the world. our governments are getting more and more out of control with their communist ways. if I would have been those parents someone would have gotten shot. we have the right to protect our family and property from anyone who poses a threat no matter who they are. the American people need to grow a set and stop being little cowards and stand up to corrupt communist America like the constitution says for us to do when they get out of control.
