FBI Assistant Director Andrew McCabe called a February 14th New York Times story claiming that the bureau was investigating Trump campaign staffers for allegedly being in “constant contact” with Russian Intel “BS”, according to senior White House officials. According to the same officials, FBI Director James Comey made a similar statement to White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, calling into question the accuracy of The New York Times’ reporting, Hannity reports.

The news comes on the same day that CNN ran with a story which asserted that the White House tried to pressure the FBI to refute recent stories about the Trump campaign’s alleged connections to Russia.

According to background information provided to reporters by the White House on Friday morning, it was the FBI that first approached Priebus about the veracity of the New York Times’ story and not, as CNN has suggested, the opposite way around.

According to a White House Pool report by Dan Freedman of Hearst Newspapers, McCabe told Priebus, “I want you to know [the] story in the NYT (in FBI investigating contacts between Trump campaign people and Russian intel) is BS.” The conversation took place on February 15th, one day after the New York Times published its initial story.

According to the report, Priebus then asked McCabe what, if anything, the White House could do to help refute the story.

Later, McCabe reached out to Priebus and said, “We’d love to help but we can’t get into the position of making a statement on every story.”

According to the rerport, FBI Director James Comey reached out to Priebus shortly thereafter with a similar message: The New York Times story is BS, but the FBI can’t put out a statement.

The report calls into question not only The New York Times’ initial reporting, but also CNN’s Friday report which implied that White House initially approached the FBI.
