In an exclusive interview with NBC News‘ Cynthia McFadden, from Nairobi, Kenya,  Bill Clinton said his charity has never done anything “knowingly inappropriate.”

Clinton also said he would continue to accept paid speech engagements if his wife wins in 2016.

“I gotta pay our bills,” he said. “And I also give a lot of it to the foundation every year.” 

The Washington Post reported that Bill Clinton was paid at least $26 million in speaking fees by companies and organizations that are also major donors to the foundation he created after leaving the White House, according to a Washington Post analysis of public records and foundation data.

He has also been paid $104.9 million for 542 speeches around the world between January 2001, when he left the White House, and January 2013, when Hillary stepped down as secretary of state, according to a Washington Post review of the family’s federal financial disclosures.
