Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said on Sunday in a dire warning issued after last week’s attack at a cartoon contest in Texas, that ‘lone-wolf terrorists’ could “strike at any moment.”
“We’re very definitely in a new environment, because of ISIL’s effective use of social media, the Internet, which has the ability to reach into the homeland and possibly inspire others,” Johnson said on ABC’s “This Week,” using the Obama administration’s preferred term for ISIS.
“We’re very definitely in a new phase in the global terrorist threat, where the so-called lone wolf could strike at any moment,” Johnson added. “Because of the use of the Internet, we could have little or no notice in advance of an independent actor attempting to strike.”
Johnson said that efforts to discourage young disaffected Muslims from joining or helping ISIS “has to come from Islamic leaders, who frankly can talk the language better than the federal government can,” he said. Johnson also said not enough is being done on their part.
