“Well, first of all, the kind of gun being carried he shouldn’t be carrying.”
The deadliest shooting in Texas history could have claimed even more lives if it were not for two armed strangers who jumped into action.
When Devin Patrick Kelley opened fire inside First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Stephen Willeford, who lives next to the church, grabbed his own gun and ran barefoot out of his house to confront the gunman.
“What do you say to the man who stepped up when he heard the gunshots? I’d say he’s a hero,” Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt Jr. told CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Monday. “I don’t think there’s any question about that. Had he not done what he did, we could have lost more people.”
Former Vice President Joe Biden appeared on NBC’s “Today” on Monday where he stated that Willeford should not have had the weapon he used to stop the murder spree, referring to his AR-15.
Biden’s remark came in response to a question from someone in the audience who asked him to justify the Democrat’s call for more gun control when the shooter was stopped by a man who was legally licensed to carry a gun.
“Well, first of all, the kind of gun being carried he shouldn’t be carrying,” Biden said. “Assault weapons are…I wrote the last serious gun control law that was written and was law for 10 years, and it outlawed assault weapons and it outlawed weapons with magazines that had a whole lot of bullets and so you can kill a whole lot of people a lot more quickly.”
At no point does Biden acknowledge the heroism that Willeford displayed and goes on to say that there are people who legally acquire guns and turn out to be crazy.
